While there used to only be one or two options for your roof in the past, there are now countless materials that can provide protection for your home. Not only will they get the job done, but these advanced materials are a great addition to the curb appeal of any home. American Contracting NC is here to talk about the different roofing materials that you have to choose from when you are getting ready to put a new roof on your home.
Asphalt Roof Shingles
These shingles are the most commonly chosen roofing material chosen in the US because they can withstand a large variety of weather conditions. Of course with anything, there are different quality standards found within asphalt shingles, so be aware of that. It isn’t always best to choose the cheapest option. When you choose to put asphalt shingles on your roof, you need to count on replacing it within about 20 years. If you live in an area that gets extreme weather conditions such as hail, choose the shingles that come with a Class 4 rating.
Metal Roofing Sheets
This is one of the most durable types of roofing material that you can choose for your home. You can count on a metal roof to last about 60 years before needing to be replaced. They are fire resistant and can handle much of the extreme weather that you throw its way. However, if you live where there is a large amount of hail, be aware that you could see dents in the roof after a big storm.
Rubber Roofing for Flat Roofs
Rubber roofing systems are designed for use on no slope and low slope buildings and structures. They are most commonly used on commercial roofs and flat residential roofs. Rubber roofing systems boast a strong resistance to water, UV rays, heat and weather elements. Their elasticity and flexibility means rubber roofs are less likely to crack than some other roofing products. A proper installed rubber roof with water shedding and drainage features can last anywhere from 20 to 40 years.
Clay or Concrete Tiles
If you live in an area that has earthquakes, hurricanes or tornadoes, this is an excellent roof choice. They can be heavy, so this may require you to add extra support and you should avoid stepping on them as this can cause them to break. However, this is an excellent choice for both dry and warm climates. Today, tile roofing can be found most commonly in the Southwest and the Coastal South. Clay and concrete tile isn’t very popular in North Carolina due in part to the mismatch in architecture (we don’t have many Spanish or Mediterranean style homes here).
